MotherReader’s 48 Hour Book Challenge: Results
Published June 6, 2011 by Nicki
Well, this post may be four hours late, but otherwise, I observed the spirit of the contest. Here are my results!
Books Read:
The Flint Heart by Katerine Paterson
PIE by Sarah Weeks
Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick
Unforgettable by Loretta Elssworth
I would approximate I spent 14 hours reading. I didn’t get to all the books I had hoped to but I did get to NYC to see the Mets beat the Braves so it was totally worth it!
In My Mailbox
Published June 1, 2011 by NickiI found a package waiting for me upon arriving at work today. When I saw the return address, a frisson of excitement tickled my brain. “A package from Harper Collins! Oh, what can it be?” Inside I found a copy of this:
And a lovely note explaining I was “selected among the many people who participated in Early Word‘s galley chat about S.J. Watson’s book.” Awesome! I’ll tackle this one after Mother Reader’s 48 Hour Book Challange this weekend.
From Library Love Fest:
This first novel by a British health-care worker, who reportedly wrote it in between shifts at a London hospital, is a psychological thriller, a description that usually appeals to me but frequently disappoints. This one sounds promising because it’s about an amnesiac. Mr. Watson’s main character, Christine, has a strain of amnesia in which she hold memories for only a day—while sleeping at night, her memory is scoured clean. So imagine this: Her husband’s name is Ben, and one morning she picks up her journal and it says, “Don’t trust Ben.” Ridley Scott (producer of “The Good Wife,” among many other fine television series and movies) has already acquired film rights.

Scumble is the sequel to the Newbery Honor Award winner Savvy by Ingrid Law. It is slated to be released on August 17, 2010.
It is nine years after Mids’s Savvy journel and now her cousin Ledge is turning eleven.
But Ledger Kale’s savvy is a total dud–all he does is make little things fall apart. So his parents decide it’s safe to head to Wyoming, where it’s soon revealed that Ledge’s savvy is much more powerful than anyone thought. Worse, his savvy disaster has an outside witness: Sarah Jane Cabot, reporter wannabe and daughter of the local banker. Just like that, Ledge’s beloved normal life is over. Now he has to keep Sarah from turning family secrets into headlines, stop her father from foreclosing on Uncle Autry’s ranch, and scumble his savvy into control so that, someday, he can go home.
Plain Kate by debut author Erin Bow is set for a September 1, 2010 release.
Plain Kate lives in a world of superstitions and curses, where a song can heal a wound and a shadow can work deep magic. As the wood-carver’s daughter, Kate held a carving knife before a spoon, and her wooden charms are so fine that some even call her “witch-blade” — a dangerous nickname in a town where witches are hunted and burned in the square.
Enter Linay, a stranger with a proposition: In exchange for her shadow, he’ll give Kate the means to escape the town that seems set to burn her, and what’s more, he’ll grant her heart’s wish. It’s a chance for her to start over, to find a home, a family, a place to belong. But Kate soon realizes that she can’t live shadowless forever — and that Linay’s designs are darker than she ever dreamed.
Girls Parts is another novel by a debut author, John M Cusick, and is slated for an August 10, 2010 release.
David and Charlie are opposites. David has a million friends, online and off. Charlie is a soulful outsider, off the grid completely. But neither feels close to anybody.
When David’s parents present him with a hot Companion bot designed to encourage healthy bonds and treat his “dissociative disorder,” he can’t get enough of luscious redheaded Rose — and he can’t get it soon. Companions come with strict intimacy protocols, and whenever he tries anything, David gets an electric shock.
Parted from the boy she was built to love, Rose turns to Charlie, who finds he can open up, knowing Rose isn’t real. With Charlie’s help, the ideal “companion” is about to become her own best friend.

Just arrived in the mail – a Percy Jackson poster signed by Rick Riordan! I thought I’d won the contest over at Myth and Mystery but then I saw this post: “The contest is now closed, but we are sending out all the extra posters we have left, so if you are a librarian or teacher who asked for one over the last few weeks, there’s still a chance one might arrive in the mail.”
Thanks, Rick, for sending one my way! I’m having it laminated and posted on the bulletin board in our children’s area. I know the kids will be in next week, anxious to get their hands on The Last Olympian!
